ambiguous と equivocal の説明は、AMA Manualの11版で初めて Correct and Preferred Usage of Common Words and Phrases に追加された。
ambiguous と equivocal と聞くと同じ意味ではないかと思ってしまう。
AMA Manual では、これらの言葉は近い意味を持つとしたうえで、以下のように説明している。
Ambiguous means able to be understood in more than one way, having more than one possible meaning, or not expressed or clearly understood.
Equivocal is defined as having 2 or more possible interpretations or not easily explained or understood.
分かったような、分からないような。。。
調べてみると、”AMA Style Insider” というAMA Manual of Style のオフィシャルブログに、“Ambiguous, Equivocal” の記事が投稿されていた。

両者の大きな違いは、equivocal がネガティブな意味を持つことである。
The bottom line:
● Referring to test results or experimental findings having more than one interpretation? Ambiguous and equivocal are both correct, but it is worth noting that the latter can have negative overtones and is perhaps best avoided unless the reporting of results seems intentionally unclear.
● Referring to a statement having more than one interpretation? Remember that all equivocal statements are ambiguous, but not all ambiguous statements are equivocal. If the statement seems intentionally unclear with the goal of distancing or deceiving, use equivocal.
● Unambiguous and unequivocal both indicate that something has only one interpretation, although when describing a statement unequivocal is sometimes used to emphasize an absence of deceptive intent.

ちなみにライフサイエンス辞書で調べてみると、以下のように確かにequivocal にはネガティブな意味がある。

この AMA Style Insider の記事は、URLの情報からすると2012年に投稿されたものである。
かなり昔の記事だが、過去の出版年を考えると、10版への記載には間に合わない。
AMA Manual 9版 (1997発行)
AMA Manual 10版 (2007発行)
AMA Manual 11版 (2020発行)
これまで、ambiguous と equivocalの表現に注意するようにと書かれたものは見たことが無かったが、11版で採用されるということは今でもよく混同して使われているということなのだろう。
ただし、最初に示した11版での説明では、equivocalのネガティブな意味については言及していない。
例文はあるが、明らかにネガティブな意味をとらえるのは難しい。
何故だろう？
AMA Style Insider の記事のように、そこを明確に説明することこそ重要だと思うのだが。
