AMA Manual の abort と terminate に関する記述は 9版からほぼ変更がない。
Abort: to stop a process prematurely
名詞形の abortion (妊娠中絶) とともに abort の使い方について以下のように述べている。
A pregnancy, not a fetus or a woman, may be aborted.
つまり、使い方の正誤は以下の通り。
[〇] A pregnancy is aborted.
[×] A fetus is aborted.
[×] A woman is aborted.
ちなみに、google検索 (2022/9/5) の結果では、以下の通り誤りとされる使い方の方が多い。
“pregnancy is aborted” ⇒ 約 12,600 件
“fetus is aborted” ⇒ 約 40,300 件
“woman is aborted” ⇒ 約 38,600 件
AMA Manual はかなり長い間言い続けているようだが、このままいくと 12版ではすべての表現が acceptable になるのではないだろうか。
一方、terminateの方の意味は、”to bring to an ending” である。
AMA Manual には書かれていないが、「臨床英文の正しい書き方」では以下の表現を使った例文があるため、abortと同じ使い方ができる。
… pregnancy was terminated …
しかし、terminate はどちらかというと、以下の例文のように試験を「中止」するという使い方の方がなじみがあると思われる。
The trial was terminated prematurely by the data and safety monitoring board because of safety concerns.

試験は，安全性の懸念のため，データ安全性モニタリング委員会により早期に中止された．
terminate に関連して、stop、discontinue、suspend 等があるが、「中止」なのか「中断」なのかで使い分ける必要がある。
terminate は「中止」にしか使用できない。
stop は「中止」または「中断」の両方に使用可能だが、口語的な表現。
discontinue も「中止」または「中断」の両方に使用できるが、「中断」なら temporarily、「中止」なら permanently といった副詞を付けると意味が明確になる。
suspend は「中断」の場合にしか使用できない。
