これらは大きく2つに分類できる。
■ caused by, due to ⇒ 形容詞句
caused by と due to は代替的に使える表現である。
due to については because of と混同して使われる誤りが多い。
確認する方法としては、due to を caused by に入れ替えた場合でも意図した表現になるのであれば、正しい使い方をしているということ。
[〇] His death was due to ischemic stroke.
[〇] His death was caused by ischemic stroke.
以下のように「何故か？」に対する理由を述べるの場合は、due to ではなく、because of を使うのが正しい。
[×] Due to the small number of patients in this study, we could not examine the efficacy of the drug.
[〇] Because of the small number of patients in this study, we could not examine the efficacy of the drug.
■ because of, owing to ⇒ 副詞句
because of と owing to は代替的に使える表現である。
同様に、入れ替えた場合でも意図した表現になるのであれば、正しい使い方をしているということ。
