前々から書こうと思っていた compared to と compared with について書くことにする。
きっかけは、先日読んだ中山裕木子さんの『英語論文ライティング教本 ―正確・明確・簡潔に書く技法―』でも取り上げられていたこと。
中山さんの本は英語に関する知識・経験が詰まっていると同時に、”書籍”としてレベルが高いといつも感心している。
それについては機会があれば個別に書きたいと思うので、さっそく compared to/with の話に移る。
先に言うと、結論は大きく以下の３点である。
[結論①] compared to/with の使い方はスタイルガイドによって異なる。
[結論②] 比較級(～er) than や as XXX as 等の比較の表現が使えるのであればそちらを使う。
[結論③] compared を比較で使用する場合は、with を使うように統一する。
では、私がよく参照する以下の本にどのように書かれているかを順に見ていく。

先日読んだばかりだが、この本ではACSスタイルガイドを基に、compared to/with を以下のように説明している。
・ ACSスタイルガイドでは「類似」を表す際には to、「違い」を示す際には with を使用するという記載がある。
・ 論文では比較する場合は「違い」を示す文脈が大半なので、compare to ではなく、 compare with を使うことに決めておくとよい。[結論③]
・ しかし、比較の場合はできる限り compared ではなく比較級(er)を使って表現した方が良い。[結論②]

AMA Manualにおける compared to/with の説明は9版からほとんど変わっていない。
One thing or person is usually compared with another when the aim is to examine similarities or differences in detail.
An entity is compared to another when a single striking similarity (or dissimilarity) is observed or when a thing of one class is likened to one of another class, without analysis (ie, one entity is comparable to another).
つまり、
・ compared with は「類似」、「違い」を分析する時に使用するもの。
・ compared to は1つの顕著な「類似」、「違い」がある場合や、別のものにたとえたりする場合に、分析なしで使用する時に使用するもの。
・ compared to/with共に、「類似」、「違い」を表す表現だと理解できる。
例文は以下の通り少しずつ変化している。ただし、”to” の方は、comparedではなく、compareという原形を使っていることに注意する必要がある。この場合は明らかにたとえの表現になる。
【compared with の例文】
[11版] Patients in both active treatment groups had greater improvements from baseline in psychosocial functioning compared with patients receiving only routine medical care.
[10版] Compared with patients receiving only routine medical care, patients in both active treatment groups had greater improvements from baseline in psychosocial functioning and intermediate markers of cardiovascular risk.
[ 9版] Rates of improvement among patients treated with the new therapy were compared with rates among those treated with conventional therapy.

この教材には以下の内容が書かれており、複数のスタイルガイドを参照しており、客観的で納得感がある。
・compared to/with ではなく 比較級(～er) than や as XXX as を使って表現すること。[結論②]
・ compared to/with の正しい使い方は以下のようにスタイルガイドによって異なる。一般のものであれ、社内のスタイルガイドであれ、選択したガイドに従うこと。[結論①]

compared with は、「類似」と「違い」について話す際に使われる。また、「違い」についてのみ話す場合にも使われる。

■薬事・申請における英文メディカル・ライティング入門
この本で参照しているAMA Manual は 10版。
・ 比較級と compared to/with を併用しない。比較級には than を使うこと。
⇒”AAA is greater compared with BBB” のような表現はNG。
・ compare X with Y は 「XとYを比較する」という意味で、同種間の比較。
・ compare X to Y は 「XをYに例える」という意味で、類似性を持つ異種間の比喩。
・ 過去分詞の compared の場合は with でも to でも、どちらも比較の意味で使うことができる。
そのため、比較の意味で compared を使う場合はかならず with を使うと間違いがない。[結論③]
