2020/7/9のアブストラクトで立て続けに出た “die from” という表現。

AMA Manual 第11版には以下のように書かれている。(第10版も同様)

die from, die of – Persons die of, not from, specific diseases or disorders.
病気で死ぬ場合には、”die of” を使うように書かれている。
参考までに、事故で死ぬ場合は、”die from” となり、名詞形の death の場合は病気であろうが事故であろうが “death from” となる。
ネットでの使われ方を確認すると以下の通り。
まずは respiratory failure (呼吸不全)から。

respiratory failure (呼吸不全) の場合、昔からある疾患なので、きちんと “died of” を使っている方が多い。

”die of Covid-19″ →約 12,700,000 件

”die of Covid-19″ site:.com →約 7,510,000 件

なんと “died of” と “died from” が同じくらいになっている。
日本 (co.jpサイト) においては “died from” の方が圧倒的に使われている。
次回の AMA Manual 第12版では “died of” と “died from” の両方の使い方が許されているかもしれない。
言葉は変わっていくのだな。
