eg, ie は９版から11版まで継続して記載されているが、少し記述は変わっている。
eg, ie —eg comes from the Latin exempli gratia: “for example” and ie comes from id est: “that is.” Both should be followed by a comma.

eg は “exempli gratia”、ie は “id est” というラテン語に由来する。
eg, ie は “e.g.”、”i.e.” という表現の方がなじみがあるかもしれない。
New England Journal of Medicine では “e.g.”、”i.e.” を多く見かけるが、AMA Manual 内では eg, ie で統一されている。
11版で気づいた点として２点あげておく。

1点目は、上記の “Both should be followed by a comma.” が11版で新規に追加されたこと。
“e.g.”、”i.e.” で書いた場合はもっと迷いそうだが、どちらの場合でもカンマが必要である。
間違える人が多いので追加したのではないかと思う。

2点目は、eg, ie を使う場所。
11版での例文の変化に注目してみると、11版の例文は eg が括弧の中に入っていない。括弧の外でも使えるということだろう。

偶然にもユー・イングリッシュの中山さんのブログで、The ACS Style Guide では、「e.g., i.e., v.s, etc.などは、図面の説明（figure captions）、表（tables）、本文中の丸括弧（ ）でのみ使う。それ以外の箇所では、for example, that is, versus, and so forthなどとスペルアウトする。」と書かれているとの記述を見つけた。
私自身は The ACS Style Guide を持っていないので確認できないが、これはスタイルガイドによる違いなのだろう。

参考までに IT業界の例として Microsoft Style of Guide を見てみると、以下のように”e.g.”、”i.e.” を使わないようにとのことである。
e.g.: Don’t use. Use for example, such as, or like, as appropriate.
i.e.: Don’t use. Use that is instead.
う～ん、いろいろあるね。。。
