“fewer” と “less” に関する Twitter のつぶやきに AMA Manual of Style が返信していたのを見つけたので、今回は “fewer” と “less” について書くことにする。
つぶやかれていた内容は以下の通り。

それに対して、AMA Manual は以下のように返信している。

欧米の人ってちょっとウィットを入れてくるよね。キライじゃない。
AMA Manual が返信した “fewer” と “less” の使い方はマニュアル内に記載されているもの。
つまり、“fewer” と “less” に互換性はない。
“fewer” ⇒ for number (individual persons or things that are countable)
“less” ⇒ for volume, mass, and percentage/proportion (indicating degree or value)
※percentage/proportion は11版で追加されたもの。
“fewer” と “less” に関する使い方の記述は ９版から記載されており、ネイティブでも誤った使い方をすることが多いことが推測される。
以下は正しい使い方。
Fewer interventions may not always mean less care.
間違いやすそうなケースで言うと、data には以下の通り “fewer” を使用する。
They reported fewer data (not: They reported less data).
9版には以下の例文が記載されていたが、これは確かにわかりづらいなぁ。
One intervention fewer or One less intervention (not: One fewer intervention)
未来は分からないが、Tweet の返信はほとんどが “No” だったので、”fewer” と “less” はまだまだ使い分けを意識する必要がある。
