[AMA Manual] principal と principle

principal と principle に関する記述は AMA Manual の11版から記載されている。

principal と principle は見た目は似ているが、意味は異なる。

■ principal

principal は名詞または形容詞として使用される。

principal には様々な意味があるが、メディカル分野では、principal investigator のように “the main or primary one of a group” として使われているのをよくみかける。

1.34 Investigator
A person responsible for the conduct of the clinical trial at a trial site. If a trial is conducted by a team of individuals at a trial site, the investigator is the responsible leader of the team and may be called the principal investigator.

1.34 治験責任医師 Investigator
治験実施施設において治験の実施に関して責任を有する医師又は歯科医師．治験実施施設において，治験が複数の者から成るチームにより実施される場合には．治験責任医師は当該チームの責任者たるリーダーであり，首席治験医師(principal investigator) と呼ばれることがある．

ICH-E6 臨床試験

その他、以下の例文のような表現もよく使われる。

[例文] The principal safety outcome was bleeding.
⇒主要安全性転帰は出血とした．

[例文] Mild gastrointestinal symptoms were the principal side effect.
⇒軽度の消化器症状が主な副作用であった．

■ principle

principle は名詞としてのみ使用される。

意味としては、”a premise”、”a basic truth”、”a general assumption”。

[例文] The analysis was conducted according to the intention-to-treat principle.
⇒解析は intention-to-treat の原則に基づいて行った．
