“singular they”はAMA Manual 11版では認められている。。。
いきなり何を言い出すのか？と思っているだろうか。
順を追って話をしよう。
これを調べるきっかけとなったのは、IT案件のフィードバックで修正部分に”he/she”が使われていたこと。
私が複数形で書いた文を単数に修正する際にその表現を使っていたのだ。
「そうか。。。自分は絶対使わないが、必要最低限の修正にするためにそうしてくれたのだな」と理解して、否定的な感情など全くなかった。
その後、マイクロソフトのスタイルガイドを眺めていると、”he/she” は “Don’t use.” と書かれているのを発見。

he/she
Don’t use.
Don’t use he, him, his, she, her, or hers in generic references. Instead:
・Rewrite to use the second person (you).
・Rewrite the sentence to have a plural noun and pronoun.
・Use the or a instead of a pronoun (for example, “the document”).
・Refer to a person’s role (reader, employee, customer, or client, for example).
・Use person or individual.
If you can’t write around the problem, it’s OK to use a plural pronoun (they, their, or them) in generic references to a single person. Don’t use constructions like he/she and s/he.

書き換えることが第一選択肢で、その中には文全体を複数形にするというやり方も書かれている。
しかし、最後には書き換えが難しいなら“singular they”を使ってもよいとのこと。
さて、ここからはAMA Manualの話。
AMA Manual 3兄弟の出番である。
以下は、9版(p214)、10版(p353)、11版(p472-473)でほぼ同じである。
“he/she”という表現ではなく、性別を指定する場合はそれを明確にする、できればgender neutralな表現にするように書かれている。
ただし、”he/she”が全く認められていないかというとそういうわけではない。以下の場合は認められている。
If the sex is unspecified and does not matter, the slash construction is permissible.
This aspiration technique is one that any physician can master whether or not he/she has surgical expertise.
“最近のトレンド”では、複数形に書き換えることで”sexist language”を避けるとすべての版で書かれているのが面白い。すごく長いトレンドだな。。。
さて、同じなのはここまで。
重要なのは、11版(p430)に加わった以下の記述。基本は書き換えを推奨するのだが、それが難しい場合は“singular they”を使ってもよいとしているのはマイクロソフトのスタイルガイドと同じである。
Like The Chicago Manual of Style and AP Stylebook, the AMA Manual of Style now permits the use of they as a singular pronoun when rewriting the sentence as plural would be awkward or unclear.
これにより、9版(p267)と10版(p414)で書かれていた以下のような用例を始めとした “singular they” を禁止する記述は11版では削除されている。
[Avoid]
One must allocate their time.
Everyone must allocate their time.
[Preferred]
One must allocate one’s time.
Or: One must allocate time.
Or: Everyone must allocate time.
これで “singular they” が使えるぜ！と鼻息を荒くせずに、まずはうまく書き換えできないかを考えた方がよいだろう。
あとはクライアントのスタイルガイド次第か。
