use, usage, utility, utilize に関する記述は AMA Manual の9版から記載されている。
Use は誰もが知っている通り、「使う」という意味である。
しかし、格調高い文章にしたいと思ってか、 utilize という単語を使ったりしてしまう。
身に覚えのある人は多いだろう。
多くの場合、それは誤った使い方である。
Utilize という単語は、”to find a profitable or practical use for XXX” という意味があり、あるものについて新しい使い方をする場合に使うものである。
大抵の場合は、use を使う方が正しい
ただし、”utilization review” や “utilization rate” といった用語は例外として使われている。
以下、use と utilize の例文を示す。
[例文] We used correlation and hierarchical linear regression analyses.
[例文] Survivors utilized plastic garbage bottles for making “lifeboats” to escape flooding.
Usage は、例えば言語など、何らかの決まりに基づいた使い方を表す。
[例文] The style manual determines what the correct usage should be.
Utility は有用性 (fitness for some purpose, or usefulness) を表すものであり、名詞形の use と代替的に使用することはできない。
