Period (ピリオド), Question Mark (疑問符), Exclamation Point (感嘆符) に関する記述は AMA Manual の9版から記載されている。
① Period (ピリオド)
文の終わりにつける記号であること以外に以下の注意が必要である。
■文の終わりの引用符や参照文献の番号がある場合には、その前につける。
The child is rated in 7 areas, such as “accepts responsibility” and “interacts appropriately with peers.”
We followed the methods of Wilkes et al.5
■文の終わりにアポストロフィーがある場合は、その後につける。
The intervention group’s scores were better than previous patients‘.
■完全な文を括弧 (parentheses) または角括弧 (brackets) で囲んでいる場合は、終わりの括弧の前につける。 (8.5.1.3, Punctuation Marks With Parentheses 参照)
※これは疑問符、感嘆符についても同様。
※また、括弧に閉じた完全な文章が文中に挿入された場合は、括弧の前にピリオドを付けない記載が可能。括弧内の文がピリオドがついた完全な文である場合は、先頭は大文字とする。
◇ The discussion on informed consent lasted 2 hours. (A final draft has yet to be written.) The discussion failed to resolve the question.
AMA Manual 11th
◇ The discussion on informed consent lasted 2 hours (a final draft has yet to be written) and did not resolve the question.
◇ After what seemed an eternity (It took 2 hours!), the discussion on informed consent ended.
■列挙表示にも使用する場合

簡単なガイドラインは以下の通り。
・列挙しているものが不完全文であればピリオドや疑問符は付けない。
・列挙しているものが完全文であればピリオドや疑問符を付ける。
・不完全文と完全文という2つの文体が混在している場合は、まずはどちらかの文体に統一する。
・以下のように、列挙しているもので１つの文になるような記述の場合、1つの文として扱い、最後にピリオドを付ける。

◇ producing discomfort when touched or when tight clothing is worn.
■「18.5. Enumerarion」での説明
⇒完全な文を列挙している場合は、それぞれの文を大文字で開始して最後にピリオドを付ける。
⇒完全な文を列挙している場合は、それぞれの項目の最後にピリオドは付けない。最初を大文字にするかはケースバイケース。例えば、項目が長い場合は大文字にするなどで判断する。
■ピリオドを使わないケース
JAMA Network journalsでは、St, Dr, Blvd, ie, eg などの敬称、科学用語、略語にはピリオドを付けない。
数字としてのNo.や名前のSt.にはピリオドを使用するが、住所としてのStやSteにはピリオドを使用しない。

② Question Mark (疑問符)
■日付、時代などに疑問がある場合に使用。
Hippocrates (460?-375 BCE) is often referred to as the Father of Medicine.
■文の終わりの引用符や括弧の前につける。
The patient asked her physician of 25 years, “Why are you retiring, Doctor?”
■通常の分に疑問文が含まれる場合、疑問文の最後につける。
The investigators asked the question “Have you ever injected drugs?” of every study participant.
③ Exclamation Point (感嘆符)
■文の終わりの引用符や括弧の前につける。
“Let the reader beware!” the editor warned.
The frightened child cried, “I don’t want my tonsils taken out!”
