abnormal、normal、negative、positiveの説明については例文が徐々に増えている以外は11版でも記載内容に変わりはない。（8版以前は持っていないので知らない）
これらの言葉は、結果や所見に対して使われる形容詞であり、以下のように試験や臨床検査そのものや人の健康状態に対しては使わない。
[×] The physical examination was abnormal.
[〇] Findings from the physical examination were normal.
[×] All patients tested were negative.
[〇] All patients tested were negative for dengue virus infection.
[×] Serologic tests for viral infections were negative.
[〇] Serologic test results for viral infections were negative.
[×] Biopsy was normal.
[〇] The results of the biopsy were normal.
ただし、例外として、以下のような表現は使用しても問題ない。
[〇] HIV-positive participants：HIV 陽性であった参加者
[〇] seronegative patients：血清陰性であった患者
[〇] node-negative breast tumors：リンパ節転移陰性乳癌
[〇] gram-positive bacteria：グラム陽性菌
[〇] hormone-receptor-positive metastatic breast cancer：ホルモン受容体陽性の転移性乳癌
