association と relationship は同じように見える表現ではあるが、メディカル翻訳をやり始めると割合早くにその違いを問われることになる。
Association は2つ以上の独立した変数に対して発生し、必ずしも因果関係があるわけではない。
Relationship は原因と結果を暗示しており、因果関係を示す試験の場合に使用される。
また、よく見る表現として、”be associated with ～” は意味として①「関連する」、②「伴う」の2通りに訳せる。これも、メディカル翻訳ではよく出てくる。

統計学の分野では、”association” という表現は、ある変数と別の変数との間に統計学的に有意な（偶然とは考えられない）関係が存在する時にも使われる。（必ずしも因果関係があるわけではない）
