“discontinue”は中止か中断か？

2023/12/14の1番目のアブストラクト「非糖尿病の肥満におけるセマグルチドと心血管転帰」から。

[原文]
Adverse events leading to permanent discontinuation of the trial product occurred in 1461 patients (16.6%) in the semaglutide group and 718 patients (8.2%) in the placebo group (P<0.001).

[和訳]
試験薬の中止にいたった有害事象は，セマグルチド群では 1,461 例（16.6%）に発現し，プラセボ群では 718 例（8.2%）に発現した（P＜0.001）．

このアブストラクトでは、”permanent discontinuation”の訳が「中止」となっている。

以下の表のように、中断とか中止という意味を表す英語はいろいろあるが、中断を表す単語として “discontinue” と “suspend” があげられる。

つまり、”discontinuation” だけだと「中断」と「中止」の両方がありえるため、”permanent”を付けることで「中止」ということが明確になる。

形容詞で言えば、“permanently” を付けると「中止」、“temporarily” を付けると「中断」ということを誤解なく表現できる。

ただし、『薬事・申請における英文メディカル・ライティング入門 II』の中では、“permanently discontinue” と書くのであれば、”stop” や “terminate” を使った方が分かりやすく簡潔だとも付け加えられている。

これまでのアブストラクトを検索してみると、”discontinue” 単体で使われているものも多く、文脈から「中止」か「中断」かを判断することが多い。

“permanent discontinuation” の訳としては以下のものが見つかった。

フチバチニブの恒久的中止にいたった治療関連有害事象は，患者の 2%に発現した．

調べた結果、「恒久的中止」が使われている数が多いことが印象的だった。
