Parentheses (丸括弧) と Brackets (角括弧) に関する記述は AMA Manual の9版から記載されている。
Parentheses (丸括弧) と Brackets (角括弧) は、非制限的な内容を別にしたり、数式、化学式に使われたり、読者に注意を喚起するために使用する。しかし、多用すると読みにくくなるので気を付けること。
①Parentheses (丸括弧)
■補足的な内容の記述
A known volume of fluid (150 mL) was injected.
■括弧が連続する場合 (★11版で追加された記述)
通常は括弧を連続しないようにセミコロンを使って1つの括弧にまとめたりする。
The effect size was particularly high for respiratory tract infections (adjusted hazard ratio, 2.27; 95% CI, 1.32-3.91).
まとめると意味が分かり難くなる場合は、括弧を連続して使用してもよい。
Significantly more patients withdrew from the placebo group (n = 174) than from the chelation group (n = 115) (hazard ratio, 0.66; 95% CI, 0.41-0.85; P=.001).

■略語 (abbreviation)
最初にスペルアウトしてその後括弧の中に略語を書く。
Abusive head trauma (ABT) of infants and young children has considerable morbidity and economic costs.
■括弧で複数形の可能性も表現する場合
単数形として扱う。
The name(s) of the editor(s) of the book in reference 2 is unknown.
②Brackets (角括弧)
■引用内への挿入
引用文の中に補足を記載する場合に使用する。
“The following year [1947] was a turning point.“
■括弧の中に括弧を書く場合
Parentheses (丸括弧) の中の括弧には角括弧(brackets)を使う。
Antirejection therapy included parenteral antithymocyte globulin ([ATGAM], at a daily dosage of 15 mg/kg).
